Year 2, Week 45 Results: .2 oz of plastic waste
I’m crunched for time today. Working on computer issues at work (remotely) and computer issues at home. So here’s the quick tally for the week. I worked on something special this weekend. Some of my Facebook and Twitter friends have already seen it. I’ll post it here tomorrow.

Here’s the tally. Plastic acquired before the plastic project began:
- Plastic baggie around an old obsolete instruction manual. Found while organizing my bookshelf.
And here’s the new plastic waste:
- Plastic cling wrap. Oh, this stuff is the worst! I was in downtown San Francisco and ordered a sandwich at a deli I’d never been to before. I handed them my stainless steel LunchBot container and asked for my sandwich to be placed inside it. Then, I stopped paying attention. Of course, when I got the sandwich back, it was wrapped in paper, which was wrapped in plastic cling wrap, inside my container. Sometimes, you have to S.P.E.L.L. I.T. O.U.T.
- Plastic envelope window. A payment from BlogHer for my little guest editing gig. I should ask them if they do direct deposit or Paypal.
- Plastic label from a pair of pants I bought in January. Somehow I missed this one.
- Plastic packing tape from a delivery of GlassDharma straws. I know David will switch to paper tape when he’s used up the plastic. Why do I keep getting these straws? To give them away, of course!

I got 80% – Avg error 48 miles. That ain’t half bad if you ask me. BTW, a few months back I was doing this same map thing several times over…
I got 92% and an average error of 43 miles. Not bad as I’m not American and have never been there or even studied it. I have looked at maps and the occasional tv program.

Also the glass straws are super awesome haha. I love them!! The company is awesome as well. I love them as well haha.
I also haven’t entered your giveaway pledge because I think there are others on your page that can use whatever you giveaway more than me. But as you know I’m always looking to reduce my plastic use. 
Oh and I’m scared to the state thing again in fear I will get worse lol.
I found information about the windows in envelopes.
“It is not necessary to remove the windows from envelopes prior to recycling; most window envelopes are made out of water soluble paper fiber instead of the plastic that was once used. Recycle envelopes as mixed paper.”
Have you heard about that? It was the first I’d heard of it. Maybe you’re an ounce lighter!
Hi Sara. I did actually know about the different kinds of plastic windows. Here’s my post about it a few weeks ago: http://www.fakeplasticfish.com/2009/04/year-2-week-42-results-05-oz-of-plastic.html. Some are plastic and some are not. And sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
hi beth! about spelling it out at the sandwich shop i had a similar experience last week. i took your advice and ordered the 48 pack of recycled toilet paper wrapped in paper, shipped in cardboard. i even remembered to request that paper tape be used for shipping. so the big box arrived. paper tape OVER the plastic tape. sometimes you just gotta laugh and try again next time.

I did pretty ok. Average error was 20miles and I got 88%. All my states at least overlapped the correct area except RI. Not too shabby for a non-American who now lives here.
Only 74%, avg. error 140 miles
